Regent’s University London has been a long-standing client of ours and the Refectory Mezzanine project is one of the major projects within the Blueprint masterplan project, also being undertaken by Gunn Associates. The c-shaped mezzanine, with its own bridge-link, will create additional seating for students and provide a variety of different spaces for relaxing and studying. The mezzanine floor will have more relaxed seating than the main room, below, with table nests also placed along the bridge link between the two halves.
The original refectory was constructed in the 1950’s in the Art deco style and includes features such as the dramatic wall frieze and deco-style door arches.
Gunn’s design positions a delicate, contemporary, insertion that keeps the emphasis on the original double-height space. The flowing nature of the mezzanine contrasts with the rectangular shape of the refectory. The new level is enhanced by a guarding constructed from self-supporting upright glulam posts.
